I had the honor and privilege to be a state delegate at the Republican Party Convention today at Utah Valley University. The experience (attending a party convention) was a first for me. Unfortunately I arrived with only about half an hour to spare before the meeting was called to order so I only had a few moments to greet candidates. After all was said and done some I voted for won while others did not. The most exciting race for me was the contest in the 3rd Congressional District. There were five candidates running in the 3rd: Chris Cannon, Jason Chaffetz, Joe Ferguson, Stone Fonue, and David Leavitt. The first round of voting eliminated Ferguson and Fonue. Round two resulted in the expected elimination of Leavitt (he pulled about 20% of the vote in the first round and Ferguson and Fonue had less than 5% of the vote between them). Chaffetz was well on his way to a 60%+ vote but then as a surprise to all David Leavitt asked all his delegates to vote for Cannon in the last round. Notwithsatnding the fact that a good portion of Leavitt supporters were avidly against Cannon, many crossed the line and voted Mr. Cannon’s way rather than support the newcomer, Mr. Chaffetz. Regardless, Chaffetz still pulled a 59% majority but per the party rules this means the Republican Party will be faced with a primary election in a couple months between Cannon and Chaffetz. So yes, there you have it….. We are forced to deal with Mr. Cannon in a primary due to 9 VOTES!!! I call on my fellow conservatives in Utah to finally take a stand against Mr. Cannon and vote for Mr. Chaffetz in the primary! It is time to get someone in Congress who will actually listen and respond to the constituents.
