At risk of awaking my left-wing friends I want to relate today’s experience. I woke up this morning at 5:00 AM due to a nightmare. I wiped my sleepy eyes for a few seconds and stared up at the dark ceiling. The thought then came to my mind, “this little quagmire called Social Security is a complete injustice.” How is it exactly that America became a Robin Hood society where we steal from the American worker and distribute it among the poor? Well OK, that is an exaggeration but I could not help ask the question anyway. And yes, I am being a little selfish but afterall I literally lost sleep over this. Here goes….
The reality is that the nation is requiring *some* of us to pay for the social security of everyone else. Sure I understand the jist of social security was to make all employees dump a little money in to help pay for the retired folks and then when it was our turn to retire someone else paid for me to be out of the workforce. The problem is that the government does not make everyone put money into the system. Let me provide some examples. My brother is employed by one of our glorious state governments and as a state employee. Neither my brother or his employer contribute to social security. In turn his employer contributes the difference (6.2%) into a 401K program from which my brother personally benefits at no cost to him. My mother works for a municipality and her situation is exactly the same. As a result both my mother and brother are not expecting social security benefits yet their personal retirement program is thriving. So the big question is this… Why do I have to contribute to social security and they do not? Is that not an injustice? Heck, I don’t want to receive social security benefits, so why am I compelled to fork into a failing program? I would much rather have my 6.2% contribution and my employer’s 6.2% contribution added to my own 401K, too. Why is it the government makes *me* pay for others while other family members do not? Or better yet, why is it the federal government permits *employers* to select whether we contribute to social security or not, rather than the individual? Yes Uncle Sam, I want my money back. I am so tired of our big, social, give-money-to-everyone-else government. It is time for federal government to get out of the social business because it is more than obvious they can’t get anything right. Yes, I said this post would probably be a little selfish and yes, I feel like Robin Hood is visiting every couple of weeks when I look at my pay stub.
Oh, and this is a prime time to insert a highlight of my approval of the FairTax. No, it won’t eliminate the social security program, but would fund it by equalizing contributions among everyone, including illegial aliens and foreign visitors. The FairTax would completely eliminate this injustice called a social security tax.
