Hostages in Colombia. This is old news but yesterday has again risen to the top of the headlines. FARC, a Marxist terrorist organization in Colombia, has been at war with the Colombian government since the 1960s. In order to finance its neverending battle with the Colombian government, FARC has turned to drugs and kidnapping for ransom money. What a bunch of thugs. Apparently Colombia overstepped its bounds (literally) by attacking a FARC rebel group that was approximately 1.1 miles inside Ecuador’s borders. The result was a backlash of threats from Leftist-based governments in Venezuela and Ecuador. The words were so threatening that President Hugo Chavez hinted towards war and dispatched ten batallions, including tanks, to the Colombian/Venezuelan border. He brazenly indicated he would not be opposed to sending in his Russian-made helicopters to invade Colombia should Colombia cross Venezuela’s sovereign borders. Interesting words coming from an outspoken FARC rebel supporter. While national news will be focused on Colombian and Venezuelan relations for the next few days, I think it important that we not forget that FARC still holds hostages, including at least three AMERICANS, Northrop Grumman contractors. What I haven’t figured out is how is that the United States officially is not making a bigger deal out of the terrorist cells confined within Colombia’s borders? I mean they have been holding American hostages for several years now and all we are concerned with is Afghanistan and Iraq? Where’s our loyalty to our own citizens? And are we going to idly sit by and permit two pro-Marxist leaders in Venezuela and Ecuador bully around our ally? We need to place some serious attention towards Colombia lest our friends feel alone in this plight against tyranny.
