Serves me right. I normally pay fairly close attention to the various House and Senate bills that pass through the Utah State Legislature, but when it came to the Utah State income tax rate apparently I had a bag over my head. Somehow, likely listening to news on the radio and television, I was under the impression that the the highest income tax bracket had been reduced from 6.98% to somewhere around 5%. After completing my 2007 taxes tonight I was obviously in error as I was required to pay the 6.98% tax rate for most of my earnings. To ensure this was correct I did an internet search for “utah income tax rate” and found http://incometax.utah.gov/rates.php – Sure enough, the rates did not go down. I have to take back every word of “praise” I gave the 2007 Legislature for lowering taxes. Whoops. C’mon folks, it is time to eliminate the state income tax! I am so tired of double taxation. How hard can it be to fix this thing?
