Recently there has been a lot of discussion about the new Mountain View Corridor, primarily due to the announcement that the Utah DOT has approved the initial planning of running the new freeway along 5800 West in Salt Lake County. My question is this… Why is a North/South freeway getting so much hype? What’s being done to address the real problem in Salt Lake County, an East/West corridor? And to be frank Salt Lake County has need of more than one East/West route. Take a look at one example. I live in the west part of the Salt Lake Valley and my in-laws live on the East Bench, a distance of 14.7 miles. This drive takes a miminum of 30 minutes and that time is achieved only when traffic signals agree with my driving.

This is not a new problem. The problem has been there for years, yet for some reason cities like Draper, Sandy, South Jordan, and West Jordan just keep on permitting growth in their communities without any regard to the consequences. It is time for Salt Lake County to put on some big government shoes and take care of this problem!
